Geopolitics

Iran, Ukraine, and Taiwan can transmit conflict risk through energy, food, shipping, chips, and defense procurement. The market question is whether a headline changes physical supply or policy, not simply whether tensions remain high.

Research updated

Why markets care

Hormuz is a major oil transit route. EIA recorded constrained flows and unusually volatile crude prices during the second quarter of 2026. Shipping, insurance, and available bypass capacity determine how much of a disruption reaches end prices.

Ukraine affects Black Sea trade and European energy and food supply. Taiwan matters most to the global semiconductor chain. Those channels differ, so a single geopolitical mood score cannot substitute for evidence on each one.

What to watch

  • Verified changes in Hormuz traffic, tanker insurance, Brent prices, and EIA inventories
  • Black Sea export or energy infrastructure disruptions
  • Taiwan Strait activity and semiconductor production or export restrictions

What could change the view

A de-escalation or effective rerouting could reduce risk premiums without changing the longer-term security problem.
